Customs Declarant (Import/Export/Transit)

An established logistics operation in Dover is looking for an experienced Customs Declarant to join a dedicated team handling daily customs workloads for a varied customer base. What you'll be doing
Working as part of a team of Customs Declarants, you will:
- Prepare and process import, export and transit declarations to a high standard and in line with customer requirements.
- Create, monitor and discharge NCTS transit documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Monitor incoming orders across systems/channels and proactively manage your workload.
- Review supporting documentation to ensure entries are compliant with customs and company procedures.
- Calculate customs duties/taxes where applicable and liaise with the accounting team to support debt collection where required.
- Maintain regular contact with customers-providing updates, transparency and resolving queries professionally.
- Liaise with HMRC on compliance issues (with support from supervisors/managers where needed).
- Support administrative tasks linked to recovery and finalisation of clearances.
- Create and maintain accurate customer records and ensure instructions/forms/documentation are correctly held on file.
- Carry out compliance checks, report irregularities, and support internal/external audits.
Assist the Customs Supervisor with day-to-day team running and contribute ideas for continuous improvement.
What we're looking for (essential)
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with a confident, customer-focused approach.
- Excellent organisation, attention to detail and a consistently accurate work style.
- Able to work independently, prioritise effectively, and contribute positively to the wider team.
- Awareness of GB, EU and third-country customs regulations and procedures.
- Awareness of logistics/transport procedures across modes (road, ocean, air, rail).
- Understanding of international trade concepts (e.g., INCOTERMS, VAT rules, trade agreements, sanctions).
- 5 GCSEs A-C (or equivalent).
- 1-3+ years' experience in shipping/freight forwarding (customs-biased experience preferred).
PC literate with working knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel.
Desirable experience
Experience in any of the below is advantageous:
- NCTS, ETSF In/Out, CFSP
- Import/export customs declarations and transit procedures (e.g., T1 / transit agreements)
- Authorised Consignor/Consignee
- Deferment usage and accrual
- Writing/working to SOPs/WIs
- Compliance, audits and sanctions checking
