Our client is a successful independent plant and tool hire company supplying construction, industrial and trade customers across Scotland and the North of England. Due to continued growth, they are looking to recruit an experienced Plant & Tool Hire Engineer / Fitter to join their workshop team in Dumfries.
This is a varied and hands-on role where you'll be responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair of a wide range of equipment, from small power tools through to large plant machinery. You'll play a key role in ensuring equipment is maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability and performance before being returned to customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out planned servicing, maintenance and repairs on a wide range of plant machinery and small tools.
- Diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic and basic electrical faults.
- Preparing hire equipment for customer collection and ensuring it is fully operational.
- Inspecting returned equipment, identifying damage and carrying out repairs where required.
- Completing preventative maintenance to minimise equipment downtime.
- Maintaining accurate service records and job documentation.
- Carrying out LOLER and pre-hire inspections where appropriate (training can be provided).
- Liaising with the Hire Office regarding equipment availability and repair times.
- Maintaining high standards of workshop housekeeping and Health & Safety.
- Supporting field breakdowns and site repairs when required.
- Assisting with loading, unloading and movement of equipment within the depot.

What We're Looking For
- Previous experience maintaining plant machinery, agricultural equipment, HGVs, forklifts, powered access equipment or small tools.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair skills.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems, diesel engines and basic electrical diagnostics.
- Ability to work independently whilst managing your own workload.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- A positive, flexible attitude with excellent customer focus.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Relevant engineering or mechanical qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential for candidates with strong practical experience.
